Traditional Risk Factors for Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)

  • Genetic Susceptibility (i.e., Factor V Leiden Mutation, Protein C Deficiency)
  • Estrogen-Based Oral Contraception
  • Obesity
  • Recent Surgery or injury (within 3 months)
  • Previous VTE or Family History of VTE
  • Active or Recent Cancer
  • Limited Mobility
  • Catheter in a Large Vein
  • Varicose Veins
  • Recent Illness or Bedrest
  • Height (i.e., shorter or taller than average)
  • Pregnancy
  • Increased Age
